The Keepsake
The gift that ends up holding the others.
There is a drawer in most houses with a hospital bracelet in it. A lock of hair in an envelope. The going-home outfit, folded, that nobody could bring themselves to pass on. It accumulates for years without anyone deciding to start it.
The Keepsake is that drawer, given deliberately, at the beginning. A covered linen box, and inside it the ten pieces of the first months, the gown worn home, the blanket in the bassinet, the cloths on every shoulder. They are used first and kept second. The box is where they end up.
What's inside
Le Lolo Linen Baby Keepsake Box, covered linen with a structured form. The vessel the Edit arrives in, and the object still on the shelf in a decade.
Quincy Mae Knotted Baby Gown + Hat in Oatmeal, ribbed melange knit, knotted at the bottom for changes made in the dark. The homecoming piece, and the one photographed most.
The Organic Swaddle, our own, in GOTS-certified organic Egyptian combed cotton. A single lightweight layer that drapes closely without adding heat.
Viverano Giraffe Sweater Knit Baby Blanket, GOTS-certified organic cotton, with a small giraffe motif. Light enough to layer, substantial enough to keep.
cuddle+kind Baby Bunny in Oatmeal, hand-knit in Peru. Sized for the bassinet now and the bed later.
EllaOla Bamboo Brush and Comb Set, bamboo brush, comb, and goat-hair soft brush in a lined box. For cradle cap and first hair.
The Organic Burp Cloth, Set of Four, organic cotton, cut generously enough to actually cover. One on the shoulder, one in the bag, one by the chair, one in the wash.
littleCHEW Teether in Teddy, Iris, beechwood and food-grade silicone, sized for a hand that has only recently learned to close.
Le Lolo Postpartum Journal, thirty prompts and forty-five daily tracking sheets. The only piece in the box written in her own hand.
Apotheke Santal Rock Rose Petite Candle, sandalwood, rock rose, warm musk. For the room she will spend more hours in than any other this year.
Why we built it
The Keepsake is the Edit we built for the giver who is the only one sending something. The grandmother. The godparent. The client relationship that has become a real one. When a single gift has to carry the whole occasion, it needs a shape. The box gives it one, and outlasts everything inside it.
Sizing and selection
The Quincy Mae gown and hat is one size, in Oatmeal, chosen rather than selectable because the undyed melange holds the palette together. The swaddle is thirty-four inches square in undyed ivory. The candle is the Santal Rock Rose Petite, roughly twenty-five hours of burn, sized for a bedside.
