Every culture has a version of it: the first weeks after the birth are spent inside, warm, and looked after. The Forty Days is the room she spends them in: a throw for the chair, water for the bedside, a candle for the afternoon, a tin of chamomile for the cup, and a wash for the shower.

Nothing for the baby. Nothing with a size. The one Edit where she's the one being looked after.

Why we built it

Most of what arrives in the first weeks is for the house or the baby. The Forty Days is for her, sent by the people close enough to know she's staying in.

Maison Deux, Rough Stripe Blanket in Agave
The chair she doesn't get up from.
A wide sage and white stripe, jacquard-woven from 100 percent New Zealand wool with fringe on the short sides and the stripe mirrored on the reverse. 51 by 79 inches, Woolmark and OEKO-TEX certified, made in Europe by the Dutch design studio.

Orrefors, Viva Carafe with Small Glass
Water, already there.
A 30-ounce carafe with its own small glass upturned on top, from the Swedish glassworks. Dishwasher safe.

Bohème, Notting Hill Candle, Earl Grey & Moss
Lit in the afternoon.
Bergamot and Earl Grey over honeysuckle, rose and violet, on moss, vetiver and cedarwood. Green and floral without turning sweet. 8 oz soy, about fifty hours, boxed with a drawing of the street.

The Quiet Botanist, Chamomile Tea Gift Set

Whole chamomile flowers in a recycled board canister with a gold leaf steeper, from the Hudson, New York botanist. Caffeine-free.

Costa Brazil, Nutrient-Rich Body Wash with Hyaluronic Acid, Sabonete Líquido
The shower, done properly.
A sulfate-free hand and body wash with hyaluronic acid, guaraná, açaí and aloe, in an 11 fl oz pump bottle. From the house Francisco Costa founded after Calvin Klein, with the faint resin and wood that runs through everything they make.
