Prepared in organic cotton with a generous cut that actually covers, these are the pieces a new mother reaches for without looking. The organic fiber matters here more than most places, since this is the cloth that sits against a newborn's cheek several times a day. Four is the number that works: one on the shoulder, one in the bag, one by the chair, one in the wash.
For the baby shower where practical is the point, the second-time mother who already knows what runs out first, or the friend building a layette from the beginning.
