The Heirloom

The things that were there at the beginning.

The set they wore home. The blanket they were wrapped in. The candle that was burning when the door closed behind them. None of it seems remarkable yet. It gets worn, washed, carried and moved from room to room, and somewhere along the way, without anyone deciding, some of it becomes impossible to part with. They won't know which things they'll keep yet. We chose the beginning. Time does the rest.

What's inside

Luna + Luca Bring Me Home Kimono Set in Cloud, the set they wear home, and years later the one still folded in a drawer long after it stopped fitting.

Viverano Buddy Dog Knit Blanket in Natural, organic cotton knit, washed over and over until it ends up at the foot of a bigger bed.

cuddle+kind Noah the Dog or Evelyn the Golden Puppy, hand-knit in Peru and twenty inches tall, carried through every room until it turns up in more photographs than anyone planned.

Homecourt Signature Candle in Cece, cedarwood smoke and cardamom burning in those first days home, in a ceramic vessel that stays on the shelf long after the wax is gone.

Sunday Citizen Waffle Lightweight Throw in Cloud Gray, on the nursing chair for the first feeds, then the sofa, then whichever room the family lives in next.

Hannah Bergen The Baby Kit, a linen-covered box with a journal of firsts, a pouch for the hospital bracelet and tags for the first lock of hair, the first tooth and the going-home outfit.

Why we built it

The Heirloom is the Edit for the person sending something for the beginning. Nothing in it is meant to stay in its box. It's meant to be used from the first day, so that years from now, when someone finds the going-home set in a drawer or the dog at the back of a closet, the first thing they say is that they still have it.

Filled in a little at a time, and one day handed to the child it was kept for.
